A Celebration of History in Medina, Ohio for the Bicentennial
A big reason why we are so passionate about photography is its power to create a record of life, a history. We recently had the great pleasure of photographing a prominent Medina historian and four generations of his family who came together (some from great distances!) on July 4th to celebrate him and our city’s 200th year!
The man of the day, Robert Hyde, was honored by Medina when he was named grand marshal for the Bicentennial parade, and his loved ones were present to cheer him on while he led the festivities. Robert has a passion for history and has spent more than two decades researching and developing a website which chronicles the evolution of Medina businesses in a project titled “Beyond the Storefronts”. Recording the gathering of his family on the 4th was important to not only him but the rest of his family as well, and that’s something that really resonates with us. While Robert spends much of his free time on Medina’s history, we get excited to help document HIS history…his family’s history. We imagine that as these images are shared, printed, and hung in the homes of the Hyde clan, the stories of that day will be revisited again and again…that Robert’s passion for history and for Medina will be something his great-grandchildren talk about as they grow up and look back at these images of when they were small. Will they know we were the ones who took these pictures? Of course not, and we don’t care one bit about that. What we do care about, is that we got to be a part of it…a part of recording their history.
